When you hear the words cleanse and detox, do you often connect them with all-liquid diets, fasting, celebrities checking into a rehab facility? We did too. But we’ve learned that cleansing doesn’t have to be an imposition on your life. Our bodies were designed with systems for daily cleansing and toxin elimination. Diet and exercise work together to keep our bodies in balance. But after months of overindulgence during the holidays with family and friends, our bodies need a slower transition into a healthier diet and exercise routine. Starting slowly, and treating our bodies kindly, helps make the cleaning process a good one, ensuring that we’ll stick with it and incorporate it into our lifestyle.
We’ve already started cleaning up our diets – baked oatmeal and rejuvenating juice both started this first week of cleaning off on the right foot! We’re pretty active, and we love running. But during a cleanse, it’s important to listen to your body. The body craves rest and rejuvenation during a cleanse, so moving the body in a gentle, relaxing way is important.
Incorporating yoga stretches into your daily routine is a fantastic way to rev up your body’s cleansing systems. These are a few cleansing yoga poses that we absolutely love, all of which can be done by yoga beginners and experts alike!
This week’s yoga poses:
Child’s Pose allows you to deepen your breath and prepare your body for further yoga practice. Breathe in and out through your nose, with lips sealed. During yoga practice, you can always come back to child’s pose to regain your center and breath. Photo: Kim Fisch Yoga.
Downward Facing Dog strengthens your hands, wrists, shoulders, and back, and stretches your lower back, hamstrings, and calves. It is an inverted post, with your heart above your head – relieving stress and anxiety, increasing circulation. Breathe deeply through during this pose, & bend your legs if needed. Seated Twist helps restore the spine’s natural range of of motion, cleanse organs, and stimulate circulation. Be sure to elongate the spine. To keep fro over-twisting, begin your twist at the lower back, letting it move up your back and to your neck. Photo: Core Power Yoga.
We’ll be sharing more yoga poses for cleansing next Fitness Friday!
