Hello and welcome! I’m Jaenell, and Another Root is where I share my love of writing, cooking and taking pictures of yummy food.
This is my husband, Kristian. He helped me launch this website in early 2014, and has been my single best source of encouragement ever since. He’s my live-in taste tester, which is really a win win. Plus he’s cute and makes me laugh. And together we’re the Another Root team!
I didn’t always know how to cook — but I’ve always loved food. After college, I spent two years living across the world in Turkmenistan with the Peace Corps. I started experimenting with the simple ingredients I’d find at the market, attempting to recreate dishes that reminded me of home. The results were often less-than-palatable at first, but over time I taught myself the basics — from how to poach an egg to how to combine and heighten flavors.
I have an appetite for almost anything. I love cooking plant-based dishes, and try to incorporate as many veggies as possible, but we don’t subscribe to any particular label in the food department. I have a weakness for desserts, especially anything chocolate + peanut butter ♡ I try to cook delicious, simple meals made with real food and lots of love.
Some of my favorite things in life include dark chocolate, hot sauce, lazy days with a good book, traveling, chilly morning runs, and our sweet baby girl Lycka (Swedish for ‘happiness’).
