Writer, Home Cook, Working Mama of Two

Storytelling is my passion, one that I’ve pursued both professionally and outside of my 9-5, in any spare moment I can find. Writing allows me to harness my creativity and share my love of cooking, photography and so much more.

I live in Grand Rapids, MI with my husband Kristian, our kiddos and our dog Lycka. At the top of my list of favorite things in life are summer days up north, salty tortilla chips and quiet time to read.

Together, Kristian and I launched this blog in 2014. It’s evolved with me ever since as I continue to share my family’s favorite recipes and the wonderfully messy adventure that is motherhood, along with how I’m constantly seeking to live more intentionally, appreciate what I have, love deeply, approach life with an open heart, and be good company.

It’s #WorldBreastfeedingWeek. I loved that my body could provide nourishment for my babies to grow and thrive, how it deepened our connection. And I also struggled with it. I nursed or pumped for my two boys for as long as I could, and then switched them to formula. 10 weeks for my oldest, 5.5 months for my youngest. The decision to supplement and make the switch was agonizing each time, unnecessarily so. Because no matter how you feed your child, you’re doing your absolute best and you’re an amazing mama. 100% without a doubt. Whether you nurse your little one, formula feed, exclusively pump, or land somewhere in between, you’re doing what is best for you both. Not being able to breastfeed or needing to supplement does not make you a failure. You are enough. When both my husband and I lost our jobs and filed for unemployment, we needed to take a hard look at our monthly budget. Today on the blog, I share how we were able to cut our expenses by 57%. If you're also living through unemployment right now, I hope you'll find a few useful tips to help you breathe easier through a difficult situation. Your summer zucchini surplus has met its match. With just five ingredients and 30 minutes in the kitchen, these crispy, savory zucchini fritters will be yours. They’re as simple as they are delicious, and an all-star appetizer, side dish, snack or light lunch. Just top with sour cream. (I mean, it’s optional — but is it really optional?) Get the recipe —> follow the link in my bio. Have you ever cut your own hair? Would you? I had a different post planned for today. But writing is how I process things and my mind was consumed with our decision to take our kids out of school again after just six days with their friends. It's heartbreaking. And while I still feel sad, I’m also hopeful and excited to see what we can make of this next chapter — however long it lasts. To read more on my blog, follow the link in my profile. Pulled our first carrots out of the garden yesterday (swipe to see) — thinking about roasting them whole and drizzling with a lemon tahini sauce 🤤 Get the recipe from the blog archives, follow the link in my bio @anotherroot Happy Saturday! I blended up a batch of this super refreshing Mango Pineapple Agua Fresca today, looking forward to sipping it (kiddie) poolside this afternoon. 🌊 Get the recipe in my newsletter which comes out next week! In it, I’ll also share: Anyone else feel like their skin has aged 4 years in the last 4 months? 🙋The stress and anxiety of this current reality have started to take their toll, and one of the results for me is tired, dull skin -- because I wasn’t prioritizing taking care of myself. It’s important to take care of yourself no matter what / how much is going on. Let's do better, starting now with this DIY Anti-Aging Face Mask with Retinol. Yep! Retinol, using an ingredient you probably already have in your kitchen. Get details + the recipe on my blog --> follow the link in my bio @anotherroot.
