Tomorrow the streets of Grand Rapids will be filled with 30,000+ people all reaching for the same goal – crossing the finish line in the 37th annual RiverBank Run. Drum lines, cheerleading squads, families, and friends on the sidelines the entire way cheering runners on. 25K, 15.5 miles around downtown and Millennium Park. And we’re both signed up.
It’s hard to believe that less than two years ago we ran our first 5K. Just over three miles, and we were both exhausted. Fast forward to now, and we’ve progressed to 10Ks, a half-marathon, and now the 25K. Each time pushing ourselves a little harder, testing our limitations, and realizing that we could achieve more than we ever thought we could. For us, running distance is not about speed and getting the best time. 3.1, 6.2, 13.1, 15.5 are not just numbers. Running distance and crossing the finish line – either an imaginary line during training runs or the finish on race day – gives us a sense of accomplishment and pride, a reward for months of dedication.
That’s us after the 2013 RiverBank! K had just finished the 25K, the 10K had finished about an hour earlier so there was time for a quick shower and wardrobe change.
We’re feeling ready and excited for tomorrow’s race. We’ve found the right shoes, several flavors of Gu, water bottles, a foam roller to roll out our IT bands before and after the run, and most importantly – new playlists! After months of training with the same old music, a fresh playlist definitely will help to keep the feet moving.
Tonight will be a lazy, relaxing night. We’ll be up early tomorrow morning to have breakfast a couple hours before our start time at 8:20a. And then, roughly 23,000 steps to the finish line. Wish us luck! 🙂
